The Greatest Snowstorm: Enjoying the Chaos
The biggest snowstorm for over 100 years hits Luzern.
A snowstorm unlike any other began in Lucerne. I was looking out the bedroom window and saw many cars stopped in the street — an unusual sight as well. Traffic? Something must have happened. Switzerland is so predictable that anything out of the ordinary immediately catches my attention. We decided to go out to “enjoy” the snowstorm and take some photos.
It was chaos. Cars stopped everywhere, people giving up on the bus and walking home, tired of waiting. Drivers going the wrong way, the snowplow trying to organize traffic, while others had abandoned their cars and were talking in the street. True chaos for anyone just trying to get home after a day at the office.
A woman walked by, talking on the phone in German, I didn’t understand a word, except for Schnee (snow). At the same time, an older woman passed by with her umbrella, observing the woman on the phone and the entire unusual scene.
She then looked at me and laughed.
I smiled back, as if to say: “I’m enjoying this chaos too.”
I was completely excited by all these scenes. They made me feel alive. I wanted to go out and explore more, soaking in every moment of this contrast in a country where everything usually runs in order. It was such a striking and unusual sight.
But the truth is, Pablo wasn’t feeling well for days. He was already showing symptoms of pneumonia that we would discover later. So we stayed there, soaking in the last moments before leaving, feeling the snow fall, watching the chaos around us, and cherishing the few moments we could while Lorenzo built his first snowman of the season.
